Planning on heading home Monday! : )

Saturday Victoria was moved from PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) to the regular Ped. room we had had before her surgery.  The only moniter she still has on is on her foot, and measures her oxygen and tracks her heart beat.  It looks like a little bandage around her foot with a red light.  We actually had a little cuddle with her on Saturday.  The only pain med she's getting at the moment is tylenol...though I think that I saw a nurse give her a little sucralose last night...  The Dr.s who came in this morning, said that the stitches are looking good...they are going to change the clear dressing tomorrow.  She has about a 3" incision on her head...behind her right ear, and another not quite as long in the abdominal area.  They measured her head before surgery, and got a measurement of 68cm.  Saturday morning, they measured, and got a measurement of 62 cm...today it was just over 61 cm.  The shunt they put in can regulate the amount of CSF that drains, and to avoid other complications, they set it so that it is draining quite slowly to begin with.  They intend to change if from 2.0 to 1.5 tomorrow so that it will drain slightly quicker.  Then in two weeks or so, they may
change the setting to 1.0, depending how the fluid is draining, and how her body is absorbing the CSF.  The large drop in size after the surgery is probably due to the fluid which had built up between her skull and the skin over it...some of that would have drained of during the surgery.

If all goes well, we plan on heading home Monday, the 29th of March.  We are so grateful for all of your prayers...please continue to keep us...and little Victoria in your prayers.  We continue to be thankful for God's goodness...we know that His plan is perfect...and that he continues to do all things well.

Victoria's Tale

Well, I will tell, you, I had quite the day today. I had a great nights rest, then Mommy fed me at 7am (so I am told, I'm not too good with numbers yet), and that was great, but for some reason she didn't want to give me any more that morning. I cried and fussed and fell asleep and did all my usual tricks to get more milk, but mommy must of been having a bad day or something. Anyways, around 1:15pm, a lady in a funny green suit and hat came and got me, and then someone pricked me with something. After that, the room started spinning, and I can't remember much after that. They tell me that some old guy (hey, everyone looks old to me)made a cut in my head and stuck a valve and a tube in there (maybe playing hide and seek..boy, they're not going to find it in there), and ran the tube all the way down into my tummy. I can do the neatest trick of making this water stuff go down that tube. I already feel a little better, as my head was starting to feel a little pressure. Oh one thing I forgot to tell you, they sure like tubes around here, as they put one in my nose and down my throat ...yuck. When I woke us, I definitely wanted to get that thing out of there as it really was starting to bug me. Well, they took me us to a new room now called ICU (I think it stands for intelligent children undercover) and I have alot of new people running all around me. I finally got to see mom and dad, boy did I miss them...they sure do love me, I can just tell.. But I could tell that mommy had been crying some...maybe she got a tube stuck in her throat too. Finally, they took most of the stuff off of me and I am breathing on my own again...wow, does that feel good.
So, surgery went really well. The surgeon was pleased with how things went. Victoria has a little oxygen in the nose still, of of course pain medication, but is  doing really well. The usual hospital stay after this is a couple of days, so maybe if all goes well we will go back home on Sunday. Already we can see a difference in her head. Hopefully they will get it regulated well and we can stay away from infections. Needless to say, it was a great day. The emotions have run the gamet, but we are doing well. Thank you all so much for praying for us. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of need. Blessing. Bruce

Update

For those of you who check the blog in the morning, we just wanted to let all of you know that the surgery has been postponed till 11:45 this morning.

Victoria's Surgery

Hi all. Its late and I need to get to bed, but thought I would write a little about our day. We were up at just after 6 as our appt. with the neurosurgeon was at 8. We met with his assistant first, then doc. He let us know of all the dangers ect, for which we were glad for the info, and after some discussion decided that we still wanted to go ahead with the shunt. He agreed (praise the Lord...this has been a long two weeks to finally get that answer), and schedualed us for the following day. Because of her heart murmur, they decided to admit us to the hospital today , which was just fine. We had a ct scan, and ekg, blood work, and got to see 3 different doctors. Victoria decided that she did not like a pric on the foot, nor that cold gel on her chest for the ekg...um I wonder what she will think of doctors tomorrow?? Nevertheless, she is finally settled down for the night (now if only those nurses will leave her be ...just kidding :))Linda is spending the night with her, and I will head over there in the morning. Her surgery is for around 9 am tomorrow (26th) and will last for a few hours. Lord willing, she will pull through just fine, but we trust Jesus enough to know that if He wants to take her home and look after her, that is fine with us ..I write that last sentence with much sorrow, but not sorrow that has no hope. If   our Lord conqueored death, there is no longer any need to fear it. His mercy and grace for tomorrow will be fresh, full, and sufficient, this I am confident of.
Well, believe it or not, I am craving that Shuans ice cream that is in the freezer downstairs, so will sign off till tomorrow. Resting in the secret place of the most High. Bruce

Please Pray!

Victoria was checked out by the neurosurgeon this morning, and he agreed to put in the shunt in. The surgery is set for 8:00 tomorrow morning. Please pray that the Lord would guide the doctor's hands and cause the surgery to be a success. Needless to say, there are risks involved, but the Lord knows, and He is the great healer! Thank you for praying!

Down in Fargo, but not down in spirits

I'm writing to you today from Fargo ND at the Ronald Mcdonald house where we are staying. Just a plug for Ronald Mcdonald homes..if you ever get the chance to donate to them, please do. This place has just been a lifesavour for us
So, we had a pleasant trip down here yesterday (thank you Krahn's for letting us use your car). Only one bridge was open in grand forks, and then part of the I29 was closed as we got closer to Fargo, but we got here safely. Victoria travelled really well for which we are so grateful.
We met with the doctor this morning and he checked her over. Found a little bit of a heart murmur, for which they might want to do an EKG tomorrow, but we will see. Other than that, he referred us for putting in a shunt. Tomorrow we meet with the neurosurgeon and their staff. There is a slim chance that they might refer us to another hospital to get it done, but we will see tomorrow. It still seems a little surreal that we are here at a place like this..this usually only happens to everyone else right?
If you could remember to pray for our other children, as they are on their own for a few days. I am sure they will do just fine, but I'm sure they would love a visit if any of you are in the area..hint hint.
We have been really blessed and humbled by the kindness and financial help that people have given to us. (you know who you are) I am reading right now in "Don;'t waste your Life by john Piper about giving to meet the needs of others. You can only do that if your worldview is such that you want to invest in the kingdom and be rich towards God (as opposed to just hoarding and keeping if for yourself). So, I'm learning about that as well.
Well, I will sign off for now. Will write again tomorrow. Lord willing. Bruce
Give your life away...for Jesus's sake.

Brian's visit, and living lessons of faith and trust.

Victoria Faith wearing the hat mama made for her. Her arms are open, just like we should be with our Lord.
She is doing well, gaining weight, and resting well. (Just not long enough in the night yet :))

Perfect little parts. She loves to hold your hand, and seems like she hears well. How often do I not like to hold my Saviour's hand and walk with Him in submission, but one thing I know, our Shepard never lets go.
May our ears be tuned to listening to the voice of our loving Shepard. This morning He said to me, Bruce, trust in Me with all your heart, and stop leaning on your own understanding, acknowledge Me in all your ways and let Me lead. I certainly needed to hear that this morning, as the day before I was really discouraged with running into dead ends, trying to set up a surgery for Victoria. Then today, God led us to a nurse in Warroad who, in two hours was able to accomplish what we could not in two weeks. She got an appointment set up for us next week in Fargo (the same hospital where she was born), to see a doctor, then on Thursday with a neurosurgeon, with , if all goes well, the possibility of surgery Thursday afternoon. There certainly will be risks involved, but God knows all about that too. So Tuesday night we will head down to Fargo. Please be in prayer for us in this next week.

Here we are having rootbeer floats for Victoria's one month celebration. Some statistics say she beat a 50% odd for living that long. Hurray!!!

On to some other news. Brian, Bruce's "older" brother had some meetings around Winnipeg, so came down for a visit this week. We have had a wonderful 5 days with him. The girls just loved having him read to them, I hope he didn't get too tired of them. No pictures for security purposes, but we did take him out to shoot some guns. Don't worry Kim, we didn't hide any in his suitcase.
'

We also took him mini putting, along with Abby and her younger sister. I think Ben won. We all had a great time.

We went to the Marvin Visitor center, which kinda gives some history to the company Bruce works with.

Here is my date, doesn't Linda look so young? Well, okay, I guess this is my wonderful daughter Elizabeth.
Well, that's all for now. Resting and trusting. Bruce

Surgery?

Greetings Everyone. I know it has been over a week since I have posted, but you will have to forgive me.  We have been praying about having Victoria go back to the hospital for a surgery, and feel at this time that that will be the right thing to do. The surgery will be to put a shunt in her brain to take care of all the cerebrialspinal fluid that is presently compressing against her brain.  There are two ways of doing that. Putting in a valve with a tube that would run (on the inside of her skin)down the neck, shoulder and end in her stomach. The other way is they can go into her brain with a little camera, find the third ventricle make that hole bigger in order to drain the fluid. I am not sure if the second is an option as we really don't know if the third ventricle is present, or accessible . I am waiting to hear back from a neurosurgeon from Mayo. So...we ask that we would have wisdom, be able to talk to the right people at the right time (you know, kinda the providence of our great God sort of thing), and  hopefully get this done within the next week.
Victoria has been doing remarkably well, and enjoyed being at church today, although I did find out that she does not like cold milk...I know I know, Dad's are so slow. Linda continues to recover well, but I am wondering if she is milking (pun intended) this sleeping so much in the day time thing, just a little too much :)))) (by the way, I really am just kidding, so no nasty comments.)
We continue to meet people and hear from people who have been praying for us and our family...we are humbled and grateful.
Benjamin has an interview this week for a part time job about 1.5hrs from here (while he waits to see if the border patrol position will open up), so please be in prayer for that on Tuesday. He would come home on the weekends, so we sure would miss him.
We have been really enjoying our warm weather lately, and Reuben might have gotten in his last snowboarding day in.
By the way, just to let you know...I was cheering for Canada during the hockey game at the Olympics. But unfortunately, my house was divided (:, oh well, they will get over it.
God is good today, and we just praise Him. Blessings on your day. If Jesus isn't everything to you, than what is???? Reach out and touch someones life today, who knows if they , or you will be around tomorrow.
